Alaska June, 2013

Our 7 day cruise of Alaska's inner passage began in Seattle
on June 2, 2013.

The Norwegian Pearl, was 965 feet long, 15 decks, and
served 2,394 passengers.

Our first port, Juneau, Alaska's capitol, is only accessible
by boat or plane.

Tracy Arm Fjord and Sawyer Glacier were today's
destinations from Juneau.

After 3 hours of choppy seas and hard rain, the captain our small
boat returned to Juneau.

 Juneau

Skagway survives almost entirely on tourism, as bus tours
of more than 400 cruise ships a year turn this small town
into a boom town again every summer.Up to five
ships a day stop here and, on the busiest days more than
8,000 visitors, 10 times the town's resident
population march off ships into this tiny town.

Many Alaskans enjoy their land and their privacy.

The most popular months for crab fishing are October and January
and the catch is shipped worldwide. When not fishing, our
Ketchikan based boat crew star in the popular television
show, Deadliest Catch.

About an hour into our trip, the captain thew mackerel into the
water and very soon we were amazed at the many eagles that
came swooping down. These birds build the largest nest of any
North American. The largest tree nests ever recorded for any
animal species, up to 13 feet deep, 2.5, 8 feet wide,
and one ton in weight.

White Pass, elevation 2,864 feet,  is a mountain pass through
the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains on the border of
the U.S. state of Alaska. The White Pass Trail, was one of the two
main passes used by prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush.

Emerald Lake is known for its intense green color. It is
located on the South Klondike Highway, 73 miles north of Skagway,
in Yukon Territory. The color is from light reflecting off white deposits
of marl, a mixture of clay and calcium carbonate, at the bottom
of the shallow waters.

Entering Glacer Bay in the Yukon Territory

Comprised of 3.3 million acres of mountains, glaciers, forests and
water ways, Glacier BayNational Park is one of the world's
largest protected natural areas.  Glacier Bay is 65 miles north of Juneau.

Our ship stopped near this glacier for an hour, giving everyone a chance for many great photos.

We were able to witness the calving of several glaciers.

We departed the amazing Glacier Bay in the early evening.

Susan enjoyed a tasty fish dinner while watching another ship dock in
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

The Fairmont Empress Hotel sits majestically at the cornerstone
of Victoria's Inner Harbor and busy city center. The Vancouver
Island hotel is located in British Columbia's capital city and
features beautiful architecture from the 1900's.

Butchart Gardens    Over 100 years ago the Butchart family
transformed a barren rock quarry into what is now one of the world’s
best-known horticultural attractions, covering more than 55 acres.
The gardens are a lush with flowers, rare trees and winding paths
connecting to themed gardens, including the beautiful Sunken Garden,
the Japanese Garden and the Rose Garden.
